It is hard to say exactly what punishment entails because it can be defined differently all throughout the United States and the world. It is not uncommon for scientist to come up with new words and change the meanings of old ones. Times change and words change all the time. But the laws on spanking children is different depending on the state lived in. The only thing that has change in the years is “The difference between corporal punishment and physical abuse hinges on whether the child is injured seriously enough for the case to come to the attention of child protective services, regardless of the intent of the parent”(Douglas, 44). This definition right here states it does not matter if you accidently hit that child to hard. Corporal punishment is about pain and not injury. I think that pain and injury are very close related. Just because you will not leave a mark, bruise, or broken bone does not give anyone the right to hit me or a child. Corporal punishment is basically saying it is okay to cause pain to someone as long as it does not last too long. Tasing someone only lasts two to five seconds, but that does not mean it is not incredibly painful. Not that tasing has to do with corporal punishment of children, but it does have to do with corporal punishment of adults. Child spanking is no longer just a parent child matter it is a societal problem that they made illegal. I do not know why the US has not done this yet. We can spank children and physically punish them but we can not physically punish terrorist or murders. We simply send them to jail like a time out but more extreme. It seems like we give those people time outs and children get physical punishment, if anything it should be the other way around. Sweden 's reported corporal punishment went up but the serious of each case went down. Less child abuse occurred after the law was put in place. “Corporal punishment remains a widely endorsed parenting tool in US families, and the United States stands out as one of the few high-income countries that have not followed Sweden’s lead in banning spanking”(MacKenzie, Nicklas, Waldfogel, and Brooks-Gunn, 1119).
