Atticus Finch As A Father

In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, one of the most interesting characters by far is Atticus Finch. As the father of Scout and Jem,this old man was the best lawyer in Maycomb County, who was fiercely dedicated to the idea of equality and everyone being treated the same. This is illustrated when he defended a black man in a court case he knew he would lose.He is also righteously loyal to the law, and believes that no one, no matter how close to him, has the ability to run away from the punishment of the law, which is illustrated when he refused to let Sheriff Heck Tate hush up the incident when he thought Jem killed Bob Ewell. Not only is he old and he works a different type of job that the other fathers work in Maycomb, he continues to surprise his children, with his talents that he keeps to himself because he is so humble. Atticus is the type of father that the world needs more of, as he takes the time to teach his children what’s important, how to treat others and not to be quick to judge.Not only does he teach his children these morals, but he also demonstrates them himself, with his fairness and equal treatment of all, regardless of their skin color, social standing, or even age. His best piece of advice to Scout was, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view . . . until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (pg 30). This piece of advice helped Scout throughout the novel, and helped her understand and appreciate multiple characters throughout the story, such as Mrs. Dubose, Walter Cunningham, and most importantly, Boo Radley himself.
