How often are texts made up of complete words, proper grammar, and the correct use of punctuation? Almost never. Texting and other technology have made grammar and English skills decline in the past few years. People who text do not usually use the proper punctuation, like commas or periods, their grammar has declined, and most of their texts consist of “LOL” and “OMG”. Technology, more specifically texting, is ruining English skills by corrupting the way we speak. The texting concept was developed in nineteen eighty-four by Friedhelm Hillebrand and Bernard Ghillebaert, and later in nineteen ninety-two, the first text was sent (Erickson). The first text was sent from a PC, because at the time, mobile phones did not have keyboards (Erickson). That text was sent from Neil Papworth to Richard Jarvis, and read “Merry Christmas” (Erickson). When texting first started, each person who owned a phone sent only about 0.4 texts a month, but now

Children are spending at least 6-8 hours a day on an electronic device--mostly a cell phone (Bauerline). Instead of doing homework or searching something educational, children are usually on social media, texting, or browsing the internet (Bauerline). Schools across the nation, also, are encouraging their students to do work online and becoming “e-literate” (Bauerline). Becoming “e-literate” is known as becoming illiterate because the more they are on the internet browsing around, the less they are finding out information the right way (Bauerline). All students would have to do is type in their question and it pops right up with the answer right there. There is absolutely no work being done there. Students learn more by going through books, journals, encyclopedias, or something of that sort, because they are secretly reading all of the information there is, but instead the answer is bolded or highlighted for apparent
