Briar rose and Maleficent
Folktales are always the representation of traditional stories. The printed version in which children of nowadays read are called fairytales (Widdowson). One of the popular tales is the story of “sleeping beauty” originally known as briar rose, which was published by the Grimm brothers. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were popular for their fairy tales including briar rose and lily and the lion; they also contributed to the study of different languages. Jacob was born in the year 1785 and died in the year 1863, while Wilhelm was born in the year 1786 and dies in the year 1859 (Holtze). Unlike Grimm’s briar rose, maleficent gave a depth explanation on why the villain was evil; therefore, audiences were urged to known why a character was presented as either bad or good. From the movie, Maleficent could have grown up as a very nice lady if she was not betrayed by Stephen; this explains normal human behavior. No one is born good or bad; situations, experiences, observations are the factors that determine how a person behaves. Maleficent was nice from the beginning, but Stephen betrayal turned her in to an evil person, besides, she repented after princess aurora showed her love; this shows that an evil person can change, if given a second chance. One moral lesson learnt from the movie but not from the original story is that anger, betrayal, and love could change a person’s …show more content…
In the Grimm’s briar rose, the princess had to wait for 100 years for a strong princes to come to her rescue (Jacob and Wilhelm), whereas, maleficent proved that women do not have to depend on men for liberation. Also, in maleficent, Stephen deceived maleficent it a kiss, she slept next to him because she trusted him, but in return, he took her main source of power for his selfish interest. This reveal how men take advantage of women and give no regard or whatsoever to women. Lastly, in the past, even till now, people describe women as men’s property. In the Grimm’s briar rose, the prince got married to the prince because he save her. What sort of thing is that? Women are not prizes for brave man. Maleficent showed that male oppression over women is no longer the norm in the society. Women can fight back and save
