Midsum Emotions Influence Our Choices
Our choices control our lives. They set the future and the present. We can never be sure if our choices will result in something good, or something bad. The real question is what controls our choices, what makes us choose right from wrong? In the play Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare, Helena felt jealousy toward Hermia due to Demetrius’s affection for her. As a result, Hermia and Helena’s friendship broke due to the mischief caused by Hermia. Emotions influence our choices, because they allow one to make judgements based on the feeling they feel, therefore resulting in a sense of belonging. This can be seen when Lysander and Demetrius both fall in love with Helena, “The tedious minutes I with her have spent./Not Hermia, but Helena I love,” (II, ii, 119-120). Demetrius also has the same expression and grace towards Helena, as can be seen when he says “O Helen, goddess, nymph, perfect divine!/To what, my love, shall I compare thine eyne?” (III, ii, 140-141). After this event, Hermia becomes angry with Helena. That causes her to go to extreme lengths, such as fighting her friend, Helena which can be seen in the quote “Speak!/ How low am I? I am not yet so low/But that my nails can reach unto thine eyes,” (III, ii, 311-313). Helena is not happy, she thinks that Lysander and Demetrius are playing a prank on her, and her friend wants to fight her. Even though Demetrius loves her, her sadness and hate are clouding her judgement. Hermia is also no longer happy. This is ruining Hermia and Helena’s friendship. Sadness has taken over, which is causing the two friends to fight. Friendships that end over love never turn out good. One or both sides try to hurt each other. Love is the emotion that’s making them fight. This will cause serious trouble for both of them. The theme in the text changes, because it is trying to portray how quickly emotions and choices can change. How quickly they can make one’s life good, and the others miserable. Shakespeare changes the theme to represent how emotions can change a person. How they control our lives. He is also trying to show the audience both sides of the story.
