Why Is It Important To Be In Vitro Fertilization?

Currently, there is one procedure widely used to detect mutations that could lead to heredity diseases or genetic diseases harmful to the future child’s health. When a woman wants to be a mother, she can choose in vitro fertilization (IVF) where the eggs of the mother are removed and mixed with sperm in a laboratory ("Fertility Treatment: In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)"). It is during this time embryo selection can occur if the mother wishes. The mother can choose a procedure called preimplantation genetic diagnosis. This procedure takes place post-fertilization of the mothers eggs then seeing if any bad mutations occur or if the embryos are at risk for any diseases. The parents can then decide if they want to keep the embryos if they are at risk for any genetic diseases, chromosomal disorders or heredity diseases. At this stage, the embryo has not been implanted in the mother yet, it is pre in vitro fertilization. The parents can choose the healthy embryos to be implanted in the soon to be mother. This is not a perfect procedure as it cannot detect all heritable diseases or genetic conditions ("Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis: Benefits & Concerns").

His view on designer babies is that the parents wanting the child to do one hobby or activity should not influence parental choice of choosing the traits in the child; even if the child prefers to pursue something else.
