Register to read the introduction… At the time of Edison?s findings, there was only gas and candle light used for lighting homes and laboratories. Edison was yet another great inventor of his time. One invention stands out from the rest and that is the incandescent light bulb. Edison used the current of electricity in a vacuum to produce the wondrous glow called electric light. This invention is now being used to light millions of cities, businesses, and homes all over the world. The invention of the light bulb causes many luxuries that many could not have before. The cost of lighting a home with gas was very expensive, but with the creation of this lighting device, the cost of illuminating a home became very inexpensive. This then led to a whole new industry in lighting products, which led to a booming economy. At the time, that he lived there was only short distance travel of electrical signals. Marconi?s dream was to stretch an electric signal across the Atlantic Ocean without the assistance of wire. First, he did many experiments across the English canal. After he was successful with these trials he put his dream to the test. Marconi tested that dream when he put transmitters two on either side of the ocean where he hoped to receive a signal. He stated that " if i can get a wireless signal across the sea then this meant the very shrinkage of the earth" (Dunlap 88). Shrink the world is exactly what he did. On December fourteenth nineteen hundred and one Marconi received a signal in Newfoundland from Poldhu, England. This led to many other trials in long distant signal transmission. These other long distant signal travels are responsible for the use of our cell phones, radio stations, and many of the other millions of signals that pass through our air
