Elder Abuse
Population ageing is currently one of the most significant demographic trends and becoming a worldwide problem(cite) specially among the elderly who are often the most recognized and forgotten group in this analysis. They are recognized as the ’elder’ the wisest, and perhaps the most knowledgeable about life and its experiences. This population however, is forgotten in terms of the respect and value it once contributed to society. And in today’s world this group is often marginalized because of age. The older they get, the more useless they become in the eyes of society and thus this attitude viewed towards the elderly leads to neglect and abuse. While, a definition of elder abuse currently exists, it is important to also know the different forms of abuse that are defined within the context. For example, elder abuse is divided into five forms of abuse: psychological, physical, sexual, neglect and financial abuse(cite).Furthermore, one also has to understand how each type of abuse effects the elderly and the main root cause of it. In order to examine this, we must carefully analyze society’s attitudes towards the elderly. For example, elder abuse can be determined through the lens of ageism which explains the reason why age is an important cultural dimension of societal status(cite). Also, this notion of ageism is important as it facilitates an understanding in the context of structural, political and social levels of society within which elder abuse occurs(cite). For instance, it is passed on through socialisation and enacted within institutions such as hospitals. This usually occurs through stereotypes such as characterising the elderly by senility, mental incapacitation, asexuality, and unemployability(cite). In addition, ageism is in itself abusive to older people as it fails to acknowledge the diversity of older people in society and it can fundamentally provide a justified platform where abusive activities are tolerated(cite).Ageism is an
