Exemplification Essay: The Use Of Humor In Family Guy

Improved Essays
Life without humor would be like the black and white television shows before color was introduced, dull and lifeless. It’s often used to invite a smile or laugh all whilst brightening up each day. Everyone has their own sense of humor. Some enjoy the slapstick humor of The Three Stooges while others enjoy the satirical humor of the show Family Guy. I find almost everything in life humorous, whether it be or paying off a ten dollar bet with a bag full of pennies, witnessing a friend walk face first into a sliding glass door, or making a joke about the time your best friend fell into the pool while intoxicated. All is fair play. Humor is not forced but is naturally presented though the expenses of a persons life and can be seen as relatable. …show more content…
While at the front desk the clerk says, “Ah happy anniversary Mr. Eckhart…Looks like we have a lot of romantic activities planned for you.” Awkwardly Pete then explains that the trip was originally meant for him and his ex-wife but he brought his best friend instead. Claire, the clerk, then suggests to cancel the couples massage but Andre insists that they keep it. Ruxin sarcastically says, “Yeah lets keep the massage, just remember when you’re entering Andre not to say Kevin’s name.” This joke was extremely ironic because although the best friends aren’t gay, they are at a spa retreat meant for a couple. The jokes simplicity also made it incredibly humorous because of the uncomfortable and awkward situation that was presented. Ruxin’s broad sense of humor could be seen as offensive to others however the subtleness and timing of the joke makes it more humorous rather than discourteous. Similarly, on How I Met Your Mother, Barney, a womanizer known for wearing suits, Marshal, a Columbian Law School graduate, Lily, a kindergarten teacher, and Ted, a hopeless romantic, hold a game night together. While at Ted’s …show more content…
To no one’s surprise Lily gave Barney a false tape and plays the real one over Barney’s objection. While watching the tape they see a longhaired, hippie-ish Barney, playing the keyboard and singing a weepy, desperate love song to a girl named Shannon who had left him for a yuppie alpha male. While sobbing on tape Barney says, “Shannon! I love you. I love you so much..(short pause)..What about us changing the world together?” I found this scene to be incredibly comical because many have gone through a tough breakup and have done completely senseless things to get he or she back. Witnessing someone, especially a friend, make a fool of themselves unknowingly is almost impossible not to laugh at. Furthermore, in the stand-up comedy film Laugh At My Pain, Kevin Hart, a short African American comedian, talks about his embarrassing yet humorous life stories about growing up in Philadelphia. He is a comedic genius. During the film, Kevin Hart tells the story of when his father, a serious cocaine addict, barged into the spelling bee and treated it as if it were an athletic event. Hart

The concept of humor is targeted around a person producing a comical statement or something that produces laughter and enjoyment to an audience. In the book titled Status Anxiety by Alain de Botton, the writer hypothesizes that the position of humor in society is to bring out repressed mind and messages that regular human beings can relate and apprehend without restriction from others. I trust that de Botton's stance toward humor having a vital role within the feature of society is true, because humor does indiscreetly permit people to freely vocalize and itemize information without the contraints of society on them, but additionally gives people greater awareness of the presence of wrongs in a society through making the observation surrounding…

The present study investigated the possible relationship between self-defeating humor and the use of humor as a coping strategy. It also predicts that the use of humor as a coping strategy is negatively correlated with self-defeating humor Meaning, for example, if an individual has a lower self-defeating humor score, the lower the usage of humor as a coping strategy. However, the results of the present study do not support the idea of a negative correlation. Instead, there is a weak, but significant positive correlation between self-defeating humor and the use of humor as a coping strategy, rather than the negative correlation between the two measures.…

There are many ways things can be humorous. To be considered humorous, however, a literature piece should have some aspects of humor in it. Dave Barry, an award winning author and columnist, wrote the very rhetorical “Dave Barry 's Manliness Manifesto”. Barry’s key to making his piece humorous was by using common humor elements; such as, satire and irony. People in today’s society have adopted humor and comedies into their everyday lives, whether it’d be from shows such as Saturday Night Live or from a cartoon column in the newspaper. The success of these humorous selections comes from the entertainment value as well as the sheer value of laughter. Through these positive, light-hearted responses, viewers of humorous programs associate the authors of these comedies with harmless, beneficial motivations. Stephen Colbert relayed his thoughts during an interview, saying, “You can’t laugh and be afraid at the same time.” Thus, de Botton’s view on the role of humorists is correct as it identifies humorists as effective messengers.…

Who says that’s cartoons aren’t allowed to use profanity and make fun of today’s society? Family guy awakens the subconscious and make the conscious aware. Family guy may have some rated R episodes and jokes but if you look at the show at a deeper perspective than just a face value, you will see the insightful meaning. Based on Peacocke’s article I would recommend young adults and adults to watch the show Family guy. Peacocke talks about her own struggle with the shows seemingly offensive humor.…

Some subjects are considered dangerous or impossible to address formally or face to face. Therefore, that’s where humorists play a role. Alaine de Botton, author of “Status Anxiety,” believes that because humorists can say things that other people will not, they are there to convey messages that are too dangerous to state directly. Humorists, like ones on Saturday Night Live and in movies, use comedy and jokes to bring about difficult messages. Saturday Night Live (SNL) often uses satirical skits to convey a deeper message.…

    Alain De Botton Analysis

In 2004 Alain de Botton published a book called “Status Anxiety” which talked about the purpose of humorists. de Botton said the main point of humorists in not to entertain, but to transmit impunity messages that could be dangerous or unimaginable to talk about directly. I personally disagree with de Botton because why would it be vital to slander about serious topics furtherly educating people that that topic is bad and to stay away from it. Even though society allows humorists to talk about things that other people cannot say, but still bring up the topic to further explain the controversial thing and have a good understanding of it by their way telling a joke which sometimes they cross lines that are not meant to be crossed and that should be considered bullying. de Botton believes humorists are vital in society, although sometimes humorists go overboard about serious topics such as religion, sexuality, abortion just to name some.…

Screwball comedy attempts to invert these several characteristics of film noir in order to create a more light-hearted approach to filmmaking. Like film noir, screwball comedy is an American genre that became popular during the Great Depression. Its purpose was to instill a feeling of hope within the audience through its romantic storylines. As film noir did, screwball comedy provided an escape for Americans. However, in screwball comedy, they look at the bright side in film noir, the characters are more brooding.…

Comically Crude The line drawn between comedy and vulgar references have become blurred in today's society. A comedian may make a joke which offends a great body of people all for the purpose of making a few laugh. Famous comedians make a living off of exploiting both groups, and individual peoples, with derogatory comments in order to make large masses of money. In the past, comedians would cross social lines and force society forward using both obscene language and seemingly deranged or lewd topics.…
