Savior or Menace
In 2011 around 94 percent of soybeans and up to 72 percent of corn is genetically engineered.
In 2013 GM crops were planted in 27countries, 19 of them which were developing countries. .In 2014
the global value of biotech was 15.7 billion U.S dollars. Some people say GMO 's are harmful because
of unknown side effects, food allergies and autism have appeared in people eating GMO 's, and the
plants grow wild and make it harder for the local plants to thrive, but in reality they are safe to
consume and farm because of their enriched vitamins, drought resistance, and crop yield.
Genetically Modified Crops, or GMO’s, are plants that are modified to make them drought

Sometimes they are cheaper and faster for the developing countries who really need the food.
There has been a very big discussion about using GMO’s but either way they have help people in a
very big way. The discussions have been about if the plants are safe to consume, if there is any risk if
they are eaten, and if there is any longer term effects. To date scientists have proven that there is low
risk and they are safe to …show more content…
Genitally Modified Crops are also popular because of their high output. With the high output
of crops it can keep food prices down. As Tom Laskway says, “The best you can say about GMOs’
consumer benefit is that by “simplifying” commodity agriculture, they keep commodity prices lower.”
By this Tom Laskway mean that this plants can help prices down. It can also help people in other
countries that rely on food that is not too expensive to buy.
A chef’s opinion is also very important. When asked about if the chefs like to cook with
GMO’s eight out of ten chefs said they do not like to cook with them. As Dan Myers interviewed
Chef Michel Nischan, chef Michel said, “’I am not against the science of GMO’s. With the challenges
facing the world, we need to lean on a variety of potential solutions and take advantages of the best
intelligence.” What Chef Michel is trying to say is that we should only use GMO’s if it is really
necessary. As a chef opinion your food will taste better if not genetically modified but if it is
necessary then you should use the crops.
GMO’s can also be resistant to insects and viruses. As the world famous Wikipedia
