Nonverbal Communication And Effective Communication

“A face-to-face conversation is less than 35 percent and that over 65 percent of communication is done nonverbally” (Pease & Pease, 2006). As an intern at Securities America this last summer, I was able to experience both verbal and nonverbal communication in the business world. The majority of the communication for me was nonverbal because when I participated in team meetings or even interacted with my coworkers, I usually listened to them more than speaking with them. Over the summer, I was able to develop my communication skills, and I believed they improved since the first day of work. In this paper, I am going to define what it means to be a conscious communicator, and discuss some strategies that I will employ to be an effective communicator …show more content…
To me, in order to be a conscious communicator in the workplace, one must be able to communicate effectively verbally and nonverbally. The book defines verbal communication as both our words and our fillers (Quintanilla & Wahl, 2011, p.26). Verbal communication includes talking to a coworker face-to-face as well as electronic communication because verbal communication is using words, and both examples you use words to communicate. The book also defines nonverbal communication as the way we communicate without words (Quintanilla & Wahl, 2011, p.29). Effective communication includes not only the words one speaks, but also his body language. Being a conscious communicator allows you to sound and look professional, which are both keys when working in the business world. Those who come across as polished and pulled together are quite simply more likely to be hired than those who are seen as putting in less effort (Sinberg, 2010).
This study shows that if you want to communicate to the employer that you are interested in the job, you will wear the appropriate attire. Some other ways be a conscious communicator during an interview is maintaining eye contact throughout the interview, speaking with confidence, and having appropriate hand gestures. Combining all of these elements would make an effective conscious nonverbal communicator. Effective communication is Creighton is very important. One strategy that I will use to be an effective communicator at Creighton is to be a more active listener in the classroom. Taking notes, maintaining eye contact with the professor, and sitting up straight in your chair are all effective ways to communicate to the professor that you are engaged in the topic. “Segal (2014) adds that non-verbal communication matters which it highly influences the way communication participants listen, look, speak, move, react toward something” (Hauroni, 2014).
