In this case, coach Liu’s philosophy that winning is not the main issue shows that he is suitable for this position. He acknowledged that he is dealing with a young age group of 12-14 year old boys who needs to learn other aspects of the sport and life, other than a win or lose evaluation. Coach Liu also stated during the interview that ‘Winning is just a bonus.’ I loved this slogan. Many coaches pay too much attention towards winning and they lose the value of what sport is really all about. Sometimes when too much emphasis is on winning, athletes may be compelled to continue with that sport because of the pressure that is put upon them. Sometimes, the sports ethic is lost because of the demand to win. Hence, it is no longer fun for the athlete. But in competitive status, winning is very important. It is a thrush feeling of what they have worked hard on came through for them and that they have something to show for. Not only can this boost their self- confidence, this can encourage them to try to do well all the time. However I do agree very much with Coach Liu’s philosophy. Winning is not the only way to fulfill self-gratification, the main focus is when they have used what they’ve learned and worked hard for in an imperative situation. Coach Liu not only teaches effective skills and strategies of that sport, but he also teaches skills that would be helpful in other aspects of the athlete’s life. Coach Liu provides a well-organized, and positive coaching environment to the athletes because the players listen and want to learn
