Personal Narrative: The Educated Person

It was the first day of class at SMU and I arrived to my first writing course twenty minutes early with a backpack full of brand new school supplies ready to take my freshman year by storm! I was prepared for this new chapter of my life that would be filled with taking endless notes, reading innumerable pages, and studying countless hours at the library until the information was implanted into my brain. I would ask myself, “It’s just that simple, right? If I go to class and follow instructions, I will become educated, won’t I?” That was until I was introduced to Thomas Jones’s essay, “The Educated Person” and what I once believed to be true about college education was thrown out the window. So what qualifies somebody as an educated person …show more content…

Instead of grudgingly finishing homework assignments, I now consider the skills that I am learning within the homework as well as the skills that I am learning by doing the homework. I ask myself, “Why is this information important to me? What skills am I learning by thoroughly completing my homework?” An educated person is someone who “sees the value of an assignment in the learning experience, not the grade.” (Engel 10) And by asking myself these questions, I find the energy and desire to learn the material at …show more content…
Becoming educated is important because it molds us into being well-rounded people. If I am a well-rounded person, I have the ability to interact with all different types of people and even get to know them on a more personal level. If I am not well-rounded, it will be more difficult to relate to others who don’t share the same beliefs, interests, and hobbies as me. For example, if I enrolled and learned a lot in a class about the history of America, I would be able to have an educated conversation with someone about American history. The same idea goes for learning about arts, sports, and any other type of interest someone may have. By being knowledgeable on numerous topics, an educated person can also view scenarios from various perspectives instead of focusing on the situation from a single viewpoint. A major part of being an educated person is being a well-rounded person. And a well-rounded person is simply well-suited for making new friends, finding new interests, and having an impact wherever he

“Learning as Freedom”, by Michael S. Roth, is primarily a response to recent sentiments that higher education is a waste of resources. Roth states that his opposition frequently wonder why people who aren’t going to make lots of money in their future occupation bother with going to college. (1). According to Roth, advocates of this perspective see attending higher education as “buying a customized playlist of knowledge” (1), and nothing more. Therefore, if the knowledge gained will not insure the buyer great financial success, than why expend the resources to go in the first place?…

In just one day, you come into contact with more people than you can count. Your parents in the morning, you teachers at school, your friends during lunch, and everyone in between. From a sociological perspective, each one of these interactions determines who you are and who you become as a unique individual. If someone smiles at you, or laughs at your joke, you know you said something funny, or did something right. If you get a dirty look, or someone begins crying after you say something, you probably did something wrong.…

I began working on my flexibility when I was only a year old--I did the splits across the Atlantic Ocean. With one foot in Bulgaria and one in America, I had to learn to hold my stretch for months at a time. Soon after I was carried, swaddled, and sung to on the flight into the United States, I learned to walk and speak English. I have PBS Kids and Looney Tunes mostly to thank for this, though I admit American public education could possibly have had some part in my fluency. It wasn’t long before I began writing semi-comprehensibly and nagging my parents in not one but two languages.…

Feeling Truly Educated Most teachers just give you a textbook and some notes about that certain subject or unit and then expect you to know it for the quiz or test. But that's not the case with most students, they have to get all the attention of that subject, talk it out with other students get their feedback of what they learned, or even connect the subject with what they love. Which is exactly how I truly learned. Biology 1 and Biology 2 was not my favorite subject nor my best subject in high school.…

Since the first day of class, we have been discussing what it means to be an educated person and what qualifies you to be one. There are so many answers to that question and everyone will have a different point of view about it. An educated person can be anyone who just graduated high school, a doctorate student, or even a college dropout; the possibilities are endless and there is not one straight forward definition of what an educated person is. To me an educated person is a person who is engaged in the world, open to accepting new thoughts and ideas, and is willing to learn from past and future experiences as well as educational opportunities.…

By this definition, one might argue that being educated means that you are trained or specialized to do only one thing. I believe as well as many others I have talked to about this subject that an education constitutes far more than just being trained or specialized to do one thing. I do not believe you can confine education to a single definition from a dictionary. I will be the first to admit that certain majors or degrees will set you up to be one-dimensional and specialized for one thing.…
