Dream On- understanding dreams
Dreams are stories in the mind that happens during sleep. They can be interesting and can bring out many emotions like happiness, sadness, or anger (dreams: why we dream, lucid dreaming, nightmares, common dreams and more). Dreams usually relate to real life experiences. Around two thirds of dreams are visual, but we also have a few dreams that involve sounds, tastes, smells, and movement.(Facts About Dreams). Although Scientists debate on what the significance of dreams are, they have come up with a few general ideas. Some believe that dreams sort out which memories to store and help us solve problems. Others think that dreaming has no meaning (Handagard).

The first stage of sleep lasts for about one to seven minutes and this is when it is easy to be woken up. The second stage of sleep is when it becomes harder to wake up. In the third and fourth stage it is very hard to be woken up. The fifth stage of sleep is called Rapid Eye Movement sleep. This is when dreaming start. Rapid eye movement sleep usually happens about three to five times a night. During REM, the main muscles groups shut down, and the smaller ones, such as fingers and toes, can move. Scientists believe that the main muscles shut down to prevent our body from acting out our dreams (Handagard). Sometimes the system doesn’t work, which causes us to act out our dream (Facts About Dreams). During the day, the front part of the brain controls things to make sense in the world. Odd and unusual dreams happen, because the front part of the brain shuts down when in sleep mode, so things won’t make …show more content…
Some believe that we dream for no reason. They think we only have dreams because certain parts of our brain are simulated. Others say that dreams have a value. They say it’s a kind of therapy for when we aren’t happy (Facts about dreaming). Remembering interesting dreams may help us deal with stressful things that happen in our life. Although there is not much evidence, some people believe that dreams have messages. Even though scientists have done a lot of research and has found out a lot about our brain, they still don’t know the exact reason for dreaming. (Handagard). Even though scientists still debate if dreams have meanings or not, many people who work with dreams say they are meaningful for themselves. Dreams help us learn our feelings, behavior, and emotions. Many people find that dreams can help them solve problems. Some of this may have happened because of faulty memory, coincidence, or an unconscious connection of known information.
