Tourism has been developed with the development of humanity. According to an article, “The History of Tourism: Structures on the Path to Modernity” by Ueli Gyr in 2010, the purpose of the beginning of tourism was education. The noble sent their children to another country to educate them. While staying the country, they experienced and enjoyed foreign culture and place. During the Enlightenment, educated people went abroad to enlarge their knowledge (Gyr, 2010). In the late 20 century, the number of tourists dramatically increased. Of course, the development of transportation spurred the popularity of tourism. Finally, people had a feeling of doubt about thoughtless tourism, which brings about the negative effects of a great number of tourists.

Through sustainable tourism, however, tourists are able to have a more valuable and meaningful experience than just spending money. According to a Journal “A 'Human Zoo ' for Burma 's Giraffe Girls” by Lianne George, longneck is the symbol of beauty in the tribe. They start coiling around neck when a girl became five-year old, and add one ring annually (George, 2008). This is a unique and traditional culture that tourists could not experience in any other country. Another example is slum tourism. According to an article, “Slumming in Rio” written by Rob Verger in 2008, Gang people are in charge of Slum tourism in Rio. They decide who can tour the local area, how many people visit at once, and set a guide for tourists. Because gangs take in charge of the tourism and the safety of tourists, nothing can be happened during the tour (Verger, 2008). Worldwide, there are hundreds and thousands of unique cultures that are well preserved. Tourists will take advantage of experiencing that unique culture thorough sustainable tourism. Moreover, if tourists implement volunteer experience into their travel, they can pay less amount of money for food and lodge. The reason is some local people provide food and rooms to travelers at an affordable price when travelers attend volunteer works. Spending quality time with local people while helping the destination country would be unforgettable experiences to the tourist.
