Caroline Hwang admits that she wanted to please her mother and father. Her parents moved to America, had her, and wanted her to be American. One day while picking up clothes, she recognizes the person behind the counter is Korean and Hawng pronounces her name to her. The woman does not understand Hawngs pronunciation but after a little, she recognizes what she said. When the author speaks to her mother, she asks her “When I got home, I called my parents why they never bothered to correct me,”Big deal,” my mother said” (64). The author explains while living with her parents they made her American as possible. This made her not feel like an American and yet not totally Korean either. While in graduate school, Hwang had enough of what her parents wanted for her and she dropped out.
