Why Is Hamlet Insane In Hamlet

The play Hamlet written by William Shakespeare, is about a prince named Hamlet seeking revenge for his father’s death. Everyone in Denmark including Hamlet believed the King died because of a snake bite. But actually, Hamlet Sr. was killed by his own brother Claudius. After that occurred, Claudius became the king and married Hamlet Sr’s wife Gertrude. After a couple of nights of Claudius living in the castle as the King, Hamlet Sr. came to Hamlet Jr. as a ghost to tell him how he really died. When Hamlet Jr. found out that this his uncle killed his father and married his mother , he spent the rest of his time seeking revenge on his uncle Claudius. After his insane act towards Ophelia, he wrote her an inappropriate love letter. Ophelia gave the letter directly to her father Polonius , and he brought the letter to Gertrude and Claudius(Shakespeare Act.2 Sc.2). As Claudius explained the situation, he be gained to read the letter saying “To the celestial, and my soul’s idol, the most beautified Ophelia-In her excellent white bosom,these,etc-Doubt thou the stars are fire,Doubt that the sun doth move,Doubt truth to be a liar, But never doubt I love. O dear Ophelia, I am ill at these numbers. I have not art to reckon my groans, but that I love thee best,O most best, believe it.Adieu. Thine evermore, most dear lady, whilst this machine is to him, Hamlet.”(Shakespeare Act.2 Sc.2).This was basically a love letter from Hamlet to Ophelia expressing all his sexual desires to her . Hamlet knew this letter was so inappropriate that Ophelia would give it directly to Polonius, and he would bring the letter to Claudius and Gertrude. Hamlet directed a play to depict how his father was murdered by Claudius(Shakespeare Act.5 Sc.2). During a certain part of the play, the actors acted out how Claudius inserted poison into Hamlet Sr.’s ear while he was asleep. Hamlet knew that this would finally let Claudius know that he knows the truth about his father death.Also, Hamlet included a scene in the play where it was obvious that the queen condoned her husband’s death(Shakespeare Act.5 Sc.2). The prince wanted his mother to know that she was evil , he planned everything out and it worked in his favor . One that is insane would not be able to direct a play to display the exact description of what a ghost explained to him about his death. Many believed Hamlet was actually crazy because of his superb acting skills, and Hamlet wanted people to think he was insane; everyone who believed he was insane played directly into Hamlet’s favor .Hamlet used multiple tactics to get revenge on Claudius, but pretending to be insane was the facilitating method that made him successful at completing his plans to get revenge on
