(An analysis of D.H. Lawrence’s Rocking-Horse Winner and it’s three messages) D.H. Lawrence is one of the most controversial writers in history. The ability to bring up so many different, important topics is what sets him apart from all others. Anne Wright, a biographer explains, “Lawrence's opinions earned him many enemies and he endured official persecution, censorship, and misrepresentation of his creative work throughout the second half of his life.” The points her brings up are so true that the society rejected them at first because their relation with them was all too deep. In The Rocking-Horse Winner D.H, Lawrence explains questions on economics, good and bad luck, and the ability and effects of parental guidance. D.H. A popular belief is that although some people have a great amount of luck and others do not, almost all believe that their must be bad luck to be able to have good luck. Dr. Gerald Stein explains, “ Some believe that there is no such thing as luck: that you get what you deserve and you deserve what you get.” This means that everything happens for a reason and that a person gets what they get and they cannot get upset because that is what is deserved. Lawrence bases the entire story on bad luck. The lack of luck that comes from the woman's husband not having a good enough job to satisfy the needs of the family and their economic standpoint. In The Rocking-Horse Winner D.H. Lawrence explains, “Well- I suppose...it’s because your father has no luck,” (lines 62-63). The women blames the entire situation of bad luck on her husband although she will never be satisfied with what her husband will be able to provide for. Which ties into the struggles with economic
