The audience is meant to emotionally connect with the Firefly's family, as they are the central focus of the entire story. The hero in William Forsythe's Sheriff John Wydell is strong but it is clear the movie does not want us invested in him. The Devil's Rejects was not made to make you feel like you are escaping your daily life. Would you truly want to escape your life into a murderous cult? Okay, some of the demented, twisted people of this world would. The Devil's Rejects shows the audience that anyone can be a murderer, even the sweetest most innocent looking as with the character Baby. The film also makes it known that people will do whatever they are told to do if they believe it will keep them alive or even save one's own self. The Devil's Rejects Unrated version had no real use of censorship. The film opens with newspaper clippings about missing people and a summary of how they were found. Then the film goes to the present where the family is being assaulted upon. At the end of the movie in the barricade shoot out there are flashback pictures of happier times for Baby, Otis, and Captain Spaulding. Being a fan of using freeze frame and slow motion this can be found throughout the whole film. The slow motion focused on certain important parts such as when Baby and Otis escapes out of the Firefly home through a sewer pipe during the shoot out and again when Baby runs out of the house when Sheriff John Wydell is chasing her down. Music is playing to drown out dialogue causing the scene to be more traumatic. The director behind this movie was shown to be fond of using freeze frames, slow motion, and zoom-ins to get the story out. This film was nothing less than what was to be expected from Rob Zombie with all the sexual explicit material, bloodshed, and violence. There was a bit of raw humor when watching this film and would not be recommended for the faint of heart.
