Plot Structure In Paul's Case By Willa Cather

The story “Paul’s Case”written by Willa Cather follows plot structure throughout the story. Incorporating plot structure into her story allows the audience to understand the main character and their development. Following the structure gives the reader a well developed story that has conflict, climax, and a resolution. The beginning of the story is focused on Paul and the trouble he is in at school. Paul is in trouble because he does not like school and this leads to him acting out and getting suspended. “It was Paul’s afternoon to appear before the faculty of the Pittsburg High School to account for his various misdemeanors.” Although Paul does not behave when participating in an activity against his will, he is happy and a joy to be around when he is doing an activity of his choice. “He carried messages and brought programs as though it were his greatest pleasure in life, and all the people in his section thought him a charming boy.” There are two sides to Paul one is a pleasant and joyful side while the other is rude and bad behaved. He goes to New York because he believed he would be able to live the life where he can be himself and live the lavish life he deserves. “Not once but a hundred times, Paul had planned this entry into New York.” Paul began his trip enjoying the city but then he over time realized in New York he was just like everyone else and there was nothing special about him, this helped him realize that he would not be happy anywhere. Then Paul reads the paper and finds out that his father has paid all the amount that Paul had stolen back to the theater company.
