He was by far the closest to my biological father, so the day that he left was not easy for Lucas. He used to spit at my mom when he was mad at her and said “how do you like that?” My mother would have to hold him down while he threw a temper tantrum and when he was done, he would cry and say “I just want my dad”. Lucas was never the brightest or most intelligent student throughout his many years of school. He barely finished high school. He was they type of student where if he did not like his teacher, he would definitely let the teacher know he was not fond of them. There was only one thing I was wondering: Did Thistledew change my brother for the better? They had a big commencement for the graduating guys and I just could not believe it. My big brother who had struggled for years finally accomplished something amazing. The whole commencement was very emotional, but in a good way. What are some of the main causes of tension between family members? Are the causes related to societal expectations, cultural expectations, or personal pride? Or maybe it is a combination of all of these causes? How these external and internal conflicts can affect the relationship among family members is noticeable in the short stories, “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut and “The Rules of the Game” by Amy Tan. In both, “Harrison Bergeron,” and “The Rules of the Game,” the impact of these struggles can be seen between the relationships of the parents and their children; Harrison’s parents, in “Harrison Bergeron,” show indifference towards how societal beliefs affect their son while Mrs. Jong, in “Rules of the Game,” favors cultural expectations…

In Chris McCandless’s family, one can clearly see the authoritarian family dynamic at work. For instance, when Chris tells his parents that he does not want to go to college, Walt says how “that put . . . [Billie and him] into kind of a tizzy” because “both [of them] come from blue collar families,” so “ a college degree [was] something [they didn’t] take lightly” (Krakauer 114).
