Register to read the introduction… The increase of knowledge regarding the topic altering genes has become rapid and have open and paved the hope of designing your own perfect baby. Even today, the use of reforming and adjusting the genes of an unborn child is being put in effect. “Techniques of genetic screening are already being used, whereby embryos can be selected by sex and checked for certain disease-bearing genes. This can lead to either the termination of a pregnancy, or if analyzed at a pre-implantation stage when using In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), can enable the pregnancy to be created using only non-disease bearing genes” (Steere, 2011, para. 6). Altering the babies genes can not only harm the baby, however, can also terminate the baby. Genetic screening have only showed negative effects as the result, therefore, only showing that the process for creating a designer baby will be …show more content…
“Genetic engineering, if accepted, will have a negative impact on the society. It will result in increase of unreasonable fear or hatred towards foreigners or anyone who appears different. People with genetic defects will be socially rejected” (Buzzle.com, 2011, Pros para.7). The designer children will have to face the reality that they are not like every other child among them in the world and this may put a strain on both them and the other children. Designing children may also affect race and nationalities. If certain nationalities genetically alter their children, one race may populate over the other. Children will be left out, others may feel jealous or left behind because they are not perfect and pursuing equality among both the genetically perfect child and the inferior child will be …show more content…
Designer babies can almost be compared to robots. They are all designed to do and perform the same way and this may be the result in designing children. This will affect biodiversity and affect the child’s freedom because the child will never have the chance to be their own individual. “Moreover, the diversity of the gene pool and human genetics will be affected, and this may even lead to a major percentage of the human race being wiped out completely by some major disease” (Buzzle.com, 2011, Designer para. 6). Children affect the future and altering and correcting the genes of the child make these children different from the rest. Not only will this cause separation and individuality issues, however, this can also affect these genetically engineered children’s health, which may result in

Altering the DNA of an embryo results in a loss of individuality for the child. According to Lovell-Badge of Francis Crick Institute of London, “‘It’s the thing that worries people the most, because it is felt to be unfair… It’s the same as using drugs to cheat,’” (Hamzelou). Once genetic editing becomes a social norm, making enhancements to a child will be second-nature.…

Doctors of today have advanced tools and technology to look at an embryo and tell if it is healthy and ready for life. Many mothers experience complication in pregnancy that can lead to a child being born with disabilities. As stated in JUSTIFYING INFANTICIDE AND NON-VOLUNTARY EUTHANASIA By Peter Singer, infants can be born with “irreversible intellectual disabilities, will never be rational, self-conscious beings.” With the knowledge of the child’s health before birth it gives a morally difficult question to answer. Should the child be born?…

Nicholas Staropoli is the associate director of the Genetic Literacy Project. He has a Master of Arts in biology from DePaul University and has a Bachelors of Science degree in biomedical science from Marist College. The article, “With Global Gene Editing Slowing Down, What’s the Future of ‘Designer Babies?,’” states that not enough research has been done to safely edit the genes of human embryos. While scientists have an idea about which genes control certain traits such as body type, many different traits play a role in whether a child is say, athletic or not, such as coordination or competitiveness. For this reason, to control a whole aspect of a child’s abilities is unsafe and could lead to other risks.…

You may ask “what are designer babies?” Well, designer babies are when the parents of a baby can choose the phenotypes, also known as your traits, such as eye color, height, hair color, and many more. Although having to pick your own baby’s trait would be nice, there are indeed some ethical and moral issues when doing so. One obvious problem is the cost, the practice is not going to be cheap. As a result, not everyone is going to afford this cost which can lead to a society gap, where designer babies will be smarter and better than ordinary babies.…

Furthermore, in the process of genetically modifying a baby, a lot of things could go wrong. There is a chance changing a baby’s genes can cause side effects. For instance, there was a case in which a mouse was altered to improve its memory. However, making his alteration caused the mouse to have a higher pain sensitivity (Catalano). Knowing that this could happen to a human with much worse side effects is alarming.…

As we continue to grow more intelligent within our society, science has broken barriers when it comes to DNA, genetics and what are called “designer babies.” Stated in the Oxford dictionary, designer baby, by definition is: a baby whose genetic make-up has been selected in order to eradicate a particular defect, or to ensure that a particular gene is present (Oxford Dictionary, 2017). This allows to pre-select embryos before implantation. While that sounds phenomenal, no disease has actually been cured necessarily, but through genetic engineering, scientist have been able to eliminate disease-carrying traits in the DNA code of a human embryo. This prevents the child from having that genetic disease from being passed down from parent to child.…

Designer Babies Imagine a society where kids grew up in a defect-free environment. Even if the technology that would create this seems distant, geneticists are actively researching it and there’s even a term for children that could be genetically modified. They’re called designer babies and could revolutionize the effects impairments have on our society. However, this new project could also have a negative effect on our society as well, such as the unsure success rate of the procedure. The use of this technology is a double edged sword, but I believe it could help create a more nourishing environment for youth for every child to thrive.…

One such drawback would be the accidental abortion of a child if the process is not done right. Consequences could also occur later in the child 's development as it is still unknown whether or not the process would affect the children as they grow or if it would affect their gene pool in the future. Mistakes are a possibility due to the difficulty of evaluating the purpose of every individual gene. With those being a few of the consequences, others would also intercede for the procedure going against human rights of the child or the inequality of the designer baby versus the regular child (The Ethics of ‘Designer Babies’…
