Narrative Essay On 1000 Mile Drive

Although I begged my parents to reconsider the idea of touring Colorado, I actually enjoyed the gorgeous scenery, adventurous hiking, and river rafting at the Rocky Mountain National Park. I’ve flown to Colorado many times, but we never drove or visited during the summer. I didn’t know what to expect of a 1000 mile drive, but it didn’t sound amusing. How am I going to sit in a car for over 15 hours when I can barely withstand the drive from Blanco to Port Aransas? Growing up, my dad had always contemplated visiting Colorado in the summer, but he didn’t follow through with the motive until three weeks ago.
We loaded the Tahoe at 3 am hoping to arrive at the Wildwood Inn hotel in Estes Park, Colorado before sunset. Minutes after leaving home,

I forced myself to leave my warm bed and get ready for the day. The scent of bacon came from the kitchen. “Where’d you get the food?” I asked my dad when I saw him transferring the bacon from the pan to a plate. “Just the Safeway grocery store about 4 miles down the road after you went to bed. I plan on leaving here in less than an hour for river rafting. We depart at 6:45, so eat up.” Excitement filled within him, and it warmed my heart to see him so happy. Shortly after everyone ate, we headed to the Estes Park High School to be taken by small buses to the Colorado River. Once we arrived we were taken to the Rapid Transit Rafting building to meet our raft leader. A tall, stocky man around his late 20s stood with a smile from ear to ear in front a raft. “Hey everyone! I’m Parker and I'm going to be your guide today on your journey. Have any of you river rafted before?” “No sir.” my dad proudly announced with a grin. Parker had so much energy even when he described the safety precautions and rules in detail. He directed us to the equipment we needed to wear such as an orange life jacket and blue helmet. “Alright let's hit the …show more content…
I gazed out the window examining every mountain we passed. A little over 15 minutes from the hotel, we pulled up to a white wooden sign placed in a small rock wall with the words “Rocky Mountain National Park Established in 1915.” My mom made my dad stop the car to get out and take a picture in front of the sign. Shayna and Emma stood on one side while my mom and I were on the other, meanwhile, my dad was in charge of the camera. After our picture, we got back in the car and parked. I walked to the back of the car to press the trunk button to gather some supplies my dad had packed. Emma grabbed my dad’s red North Face backpack full of bottled water, while I reached for the other green North Face bag filled with granola bars and other small

While in the national park we visited a horse ranch where we rode around the Teton range, hiked around one of the lakes at the base of one of the mountains, fished, and went white water rafting. The white water rafting is where the story begins. It was Day 8 Wednesday June 29 2011. The family climbed into yellowstone and headed to the Mad River Boat Trips in Jackson Hole, for the beginning of our excursion.…

As the powerful Colorado River churned beneath me, as it has for centuries, and the relentless sun peaked over the top of the North Rim, I could not help but feel astounded. I was in a timeless place: a place disconnected from the society I had left behind miles ago. Down here, in the lowest section of the Grand Canyon, it was just me, my friends, and the heat. Always the heat. We had started our journey, a run from the Grand Canyon’s North Rim to the South Rim, at 4 AM in a futile attempt to avoid the skyrocketing temperature and finish before the sun became the determining factor in the success of our venture.…

A good childhood is a fundamental aspect of a child's future; their happiness, health and how motivated they will be in life depends on how they were raised. A lack of proper nurturing may have dire effects. It is common for people to put up a front and act very confident, whilst truly having a very low self-esteem. People with a low self-esteem who have not been brought up correctly have a stronger possibility of being substance abusers. In Joseph Boyden's Three Day Road, Elijah Weesageechak lives a vastly troubled life, which ultimately leads to his demise.…

This distracted our minds from time. Once we arrived in Gatlinburg all was left was to venture up the mountain to our getaway. The roads were narrow, steep, and curvy. It became tense creeping up on a corner hoping another car was not coming down our way. While going up we noticed every cabin had their own…

Growing up in Vail, I would often ride the chair lift with strangers and they would ask, “Where are you from?” I would reply “here.” The people I shared the chairlift with would tell me how lucky I was, but I would just smile politely and nod, unaware of my fortune. I had grown up in mountains and didn’t know anything different. As I have gotten older and been fortunate enough to have traveled outside of my familiar mountain range, I have realized how intensely beautiful mountains are.…

The Great Smoky Mountains I had never smelt the mountains before. When I was planning my trip everyone who had been there before said, “Oh, that smell! You’ll never forget it!”. I always knew it would be an unforgettable trip I just never thought I would crave the mountains afterwards. I can still feel the cool, crisp air that I inhaled when I walked to the porch to watch the sunrise.…

As we continued our drive, the day felt like any other of our typical adventures. We went to go camping at Skinny Dip Falls about 30 miles into the Parkway. Macklemore was playing from the stereo, and my head was pressed against the window, taking in everything the scenery had to offer. I was infatuated with how the layers of mountains seem to fade away perfectly the further they were. There was a fog that clung low to the valleys giving off a “smoky” appearance, which is the reasoning behind its nickname “The Great Smoky Mountains”.…

Managing to ignore the voices in my head that tell me I’m not capable, the determination inside of me grows; I wanted to prove myself wrong. While droplets of sweat brim over the tip of my nose, aching muscles bicker in rebellion with each step. I came to a stop as my neck stretched back to examine the enormous mountain that towered over me. As the sun set behind it, an ominous silhouette stared back and cast a shadow over a trail leading into darkness. My friend’s eyes widened in wonder as I commanded, “Hike on!”…

“Wow!” I said to my dad as the coach bus rolled into the hilly parking lot of the Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort on Mirror Lake. My eyes lit up with excitement like a dog seeing a new chew toy. The only thing to do was to not look down at the 1,000 feet below me at the winding river. We finally stopped at a small crack in the wall. Our trip leader designated time for reflection on what the outdoors meant to us, and how being in the backcountry has changed us over our past four summers at camp. Being in nature gives me a sense of wonder and an irreplaceable magical feeling. The outdoors are a safe haven away from the craziness of life, they are able to surround and soothe, as well as…

Four in the morning. It was easy to forget Arizona's usual suffocating heat as my sweatshirt did its best to battle off the freezing morning. Cold crisp wind nips at my exposed skin as I walk to the edge of the scene and feel the cool metal railing under my hands. Viewing the Grand Canyon for the first time, there is one word that comes to mind, clouds. That is all that could be seen, long, wispy, almost mocking clouds.…

Memories Growing up and traveling to Mexico as a child I remember my mother always packing our old, outgrown clothes. She would pack pretty much everything we no longer used that was in fairly good condition. Jeans, shirts, dresses, shoes then she would go out and buy towels, jackets even, irons. I never really understood why we would take all these things with us. “They sold them in stores didn 't they?…
