Chapter 1 Experiential Exercise: Management Aptitude The quiz rated my experience and strength in three managerial skills: conceptual, human, and technical. The text recommends a balance between all three, and recommends taking courses to strengthen any area of weakness (Daft, 2014 p.32).
I scored a twenty-seven for conceptual skills on the quiz. This was my strongest area identified on this assessment. I do feel that years of making mistakes and experiencing success while leading others has helped me to better see past the issues that are on the surface of situations, and better perceive the underlying concepts that need addressed. The forethought to be proactive rather than reactive is a skill that all successful leaders must possess.

When taking this assessment I scored a three and a half, for my ability to adapt to change. The average score on the exam for managers is three (Daft, 2014 p.102). In the past I have worked in very fluid environments that the only constant was change. Change for the sake of change, many times leads to disillusionment among the workforce, however resistance to change itself I have found futile. Change for the better or worse will occur over time, whither perceived or not. Indeed if an individual or group does not change, but the world around them does, then their position within society will change. They in turn have changed, because of inaction. This is why I feel change is inevitable, but growth is a choice one must make. JD Young does an effective job of growing, and adapting to lead in current trends of the business. For example they have completely redefined the company from a document solution company, to a business technology company. I honestly answered the first with a check in each box. This is because achieving personal goals or organizational goals are equally important to success in the workplace. Being a great employee for a company that is going bankrupt is no better than getting fired from a great company. Balance must be maintained between organizational, and personal success for the sustained achievement of everyone. Because I marked both, I scored a one and a half on this portion of the overall assessment. This score just encourages me to continue to take a balanced approach to organizational and personal
