It is crucial to complete a four year pre-med program in order for a Dentist to diagnose and treat problems with a patient’s teeth, gum and related parts of the mouth. Although dentist may provide information, advice and or instructions of taking care of the oral cavity, they must first become certified. By obtaining and maintaining a doctoral degree and completing the various steps it takes to graduate from the state in which they will work for. Like many other careers, job responsibilities are emphasized greatly because dentists have to be aware of the consequences in case something is done incorrectly. There’s a variety of responsibilities that come with becoming a dentist such as restore and replace teeth damaged by decay, lost from trauma or disease with newly developed dental materials, implants, and crown and bridge techniques, perform corrective surgery on gums and supporting bones, eliminating pain from arising oral disease, mal-positioned teeth to improve chewing, and provide instructions and advise on health care and preventing measures. “Because dentists practicing privately are responsible for all office duties, they often hire receptionist, dental assistants, hygienist, and laboratory technicians” (Pre-Dental). Besides needing to have specific characteristics like scientific ability, good spatial judgment, visual memory, manual dexterity, and strong diagnostic skills, dentist must have a group of people who create the team necessary to see their patients and take well care of them.
