Symbolism In Dark They Were And Golden Eyed By Ray Braddbury

The 1930s and 1940s were a time with lots of historical importance. Some of the biggest events occurred during the time period: the Great Depression, the rise of Nazi’s, World War 2, human rights movements and the introduction of destructive missiles that could destroy a town in a matter of seconds. This was the time period in which one of most respected science fiction novelist wrote, Ray Bradbury. Bradbury was very much alive during that time and due to that he experienced all of events first hand. The influence of those events was clearly seen in his stories such as in his writings “Dark They Were and Golden-Eyed.” Superficially, this short story may seem like a simple and meaningless story about a family that traveled to Mars, with the …show more content…
Bradbury used the wind to express the continuous, power and inevitable change that was going on in the time he experienced before writing the short story. Bradbury than use water to symbolize the new self or the new beginning that occurred with both the martians and the human race after World War 2. Bradbury than used then used the rocket to symbolize the hope that he had for the human race after World War 2. Lastly, Bradbury used the atomic bomb mentioned in the story with the purpose of mentioning his disapproval with it and to show us just how negatively he viewed it. In the story “Dark they Were and Golden Eyed,” Ray Bradbury was yet again able to implement his thoughts own certain events through deceptively putting them into symbols. Using those symbols we are able to gain a greater appreciation for his literature and I encourage everyone to not just look at the superficial things of novels but to dig deeper in order to gain that true
