Bullying is a national public health problem affecting millions of students. Bullying that involves emotional or physical intimidation is associated with a major public health concern facing youth today. With the rapid increase in electronic or online communication, bullying is no longer limited to schools; cyberspace has been implicated as a new risky environment for bullying. This paper will review what is known about cyberbullying and what can be done to prevent it. Bullying can be described as repeated harmful events, which over time are directed at usual persons that are carried out by one or several other people who are stronger than the victim. Bullies need approval from their peers to repeat their horrific behavior, when they perceive that their peers are on their side they will likely do it repeatedly. Bullies target their victims, they will usually choose children who are nervous, cautious and insecure, and have a negative self image about themselves. Children who are bullied are loners and lack friends. The environment of a school for a student who is bullied will not be a positive one; the student will often feel as if the environment is frightening, most of the time this will cause anxiety and insecurity. Therefore, many victims react by becoming upset or crying as a way of dealing with their anger or fear. The person who’s cyberbullying has a pre-meditated method as to how he or she will inflict harm on others. Educators must be aware of the ways in which technology can be used to bully others. Educators should educate themselves about the many unique ways there are to communicate electronically, when communicating electronically there are no rules for spelling or grammar. Rules for capitalization and punctuation give way to shorthand style so that dialog and chats and text messages can be as rapidly sent as possible. Flaming is a phrase used to refer to angry confrontational messages, often using explicit and vulgar language.
