The song I choose for this analysis is “Dust in the wind” by Kansas. It is very interesting and contains quite a meaningful message within. Dust in the wind is a very emotion heavy and thought-filled song. The song really carries a sad feeling, not necessarily negative but the emotion expressed is definitely not a positive nor happy one. The purpose and or main topic of this song is to convey the idea of generally how unimportant we are in the world and ultimately in life itself. The message that this song is giving out, doesn’t exclude anyone, it is directed to everyone, all human beings. In essence, it is telling us how insignificant we really are overall.
It is truly amazing and even a bit mind-blowing; the potential that the song has on the realization of the meaning of existence. A very deep, profound, and most definitely thought inducing piece of music. Another main point touched in the song is how brief our existence or “stay” is here on earth, especially when looking at it from such a philosophical point of view; we are just passing by. The forever unanswered question as to what our purpose on this planet is has continued and forever will elude us and I feel that “Dust in the wind” encapsulates this.
In this song, we are metaphorically compared to “dust” and absolutely nothing more, “All we are is dust in the wind.” Stirs up a lot of feeling since we like to think of ourselves as so much more valuable and significant in the grand scheme of things. This song does a great job at bursting our bubble and putting what really matters into perspective, and that no matter how long we think we have on this planet it’s only ours for a short while.
