Moore claims that due to the cut in education funding, students are not properly educated and schools are not able to take appropriate measures to keep their schools intact. He reveals, “American schools are literally falling apart. In 1999 one-quarter of U.S public schools reported that the condition of at least one of their buildings was inadequate” (152). Moore illustrates that 25 percent of public schools in America is inadequate due to “politicians who refuse to fund education” (154). He tries to emphasize that millions of students in America are taught in a hazardous environment with a lack of supplies, that negatively impacts their ability to learn. Moore states some schools are not able to afford full-time custodians leaving teachers responsible to clean their classrooms on their own time. He further elaborates through the use of logos by referencing statistical numbers to prove his argument. Not adequate to hold all students in a classroom, he explains, “Almost 10 percent of U.S public schools have enrollments that are more than 25 percent greater than the capacity of their permanent buildings” (153). He seems to write in a liberal viewpoint as he criticizes Republican leaders and connect with his Liberal audience by blaming these conservative politicians. He specifically attacks George W. Bush by calling him “Our Idiot-in-Chief” and Richard Nixon for the decline in libraries saying, “you can start by pointing the finger (yes, that finger) at Richard Nixon” (144, 154). By going for these Republicans, Moore relates to his Democrats audience by blaming the right wings people for the decline in education. Moore picks this audience to persuade them to really stand up against these ill-advised leaders and help fix the education system where every student has the opportunity to learn and vote against these unqualified representatives. Another intended audience Moore attempts to connect with is parents with kids. Knowing that working-class parents may be concerned with their child’s education and who teaches them, Moore goes on to address the issues of society portraying teachers in a negative way. By saying, “Considering the face-slapping society gives our teachers on a daily basis…” Moore tries to persuade parents that by attacking teachers and not praising them for what they do for their children, teachers are likely to feel unappreciated and lack the support system they need to teach appropriately.
