Masaccio’s story combines versus selected from different chapters in Mathew that details why Apostles are barefoot and Jesus’s journey as they enter the town of Capernaum. Capernaum is located on the northern side of Sea of Galilee. This is where Jesus is met by the tax collector asking the Apostle’s, does your master not pay tribute (Mathew). Jesus sends Peter off to fish where he will find money in the fish’s mouth. Thus allowing them to pay tribute to the tax collector. The humanism and linear perspective are both used to create the painting as you see mountains that fade off into the distance and Peter retrieving money in the background from the fish’s mouth.
