Teenagers feel the need to have their parents’ attention and approval. Criticism and neglect from a parent can affect how they look at themselves. Small comments like “that dress shows your love handles”, or “you’ve gained some weight” can really put a dent in a teenager’s self esteem. According to Amy Votava, in an article she wrote for “Mothering” magazine, positive body image begins with good parenting. She says that parents should talk to their kids about social media and body image. There are many different types of plastic surgery that teens undergo. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) estimates that over 333,000 cosmetic procedures were executed on patients 18 years of age or younger, in the US, in 2005.
