The variety of drugs included things such as ether, amyls, cocaine, pills, LSD, and marijuana. The magazine that they are doing the traveling for, gave them three hundred dollars for trip expenses, except they spent it and much more on the drugs, and the convertible, just so they could achieve the American Dream. For some odd reason they believed that is how they should start their adventure to find the so called, “American Dream.” Out of all the beautiful and marvelous cities, states, and countries that they could have chosen from, they decided Las Vegas, Nevada, was the best way to go. Although I have been there, and it is an extremely beautiful place to explore and travel, it is not where I believe a person would be able to accomplish, let alone find the American Dream for themselves. In case you are unaware of what the “American Dream” is, it is a set of ideals in which freedom includes the opportunity for prosperity and success, as well as upward social mobility for the family and children, achieved through hard work in a society with few barriers. Thompson’s writing over his quest for the American Dream in Las Vegas tells us that anyone could win thousands or millions of dollars within a matter of minutes, possibly even seconds. They not only made a bunch of memories, but they were also able to meet tons of different people, from the hitchhiker, to the maid. They spend days and days being drug induced with the varieties that they had, and they try their best, at least I would hope, to stay out of as much trouble as they possibly could, and because of this they have to come up with as many stories as they can to explain why they have been acting the ways they have been throughout the whole entire trip. Although Duke, and his attorney, Dr. Gonzo, were already friends to begin with, this trip to find the American Dream gave them many more memories that they will be able to talk about for years to come. The American Dream is something not everyone is able to achieve throughout their lifetime, and if they are able to, they are extremely lucky, because it takes a lot out of someone to get even relatively close to getting there. Sometimes the American Dream is either having your dream job, or if you are anything like the book, it will be having a large amount of money that you would no longer have to worry about the price tag on something you want to buy.
