Contemporary dance is a dance style which is a collection of combined different techniques of other dance styles such as ballet, jazz, and modern dance. Its difference with ballet is that this style is not that structured when compared to ballet. There are no specific steps, rather you just create movement with your body. Unlike ballet, contemporary dance can be danced with improvisation. Also, floor works are performed in contemporary ballet. The steps performed in contemporary dance are more athletic because they include more tricks such as gymnastic skills. One requirement in order to be part of the Olympics is that an activity should be recognized as a sport, discipline, or an event. Just like what was discussed earlier, in terms of definition, training, and experiences, ballet does qualify to be a sport. For discipline, one way to know whether ballet can be considered as one is to look at its definition. As stated in the Oxford dictionary, discipline is an “[a]ctivity that provides mental or physical training”. Again, ballet is a form of physical activity that involves training. This makes it qualify to be a discipline. An event as stated in an Oxford dictionary is “[e]ach of several particular contests making up a sports competition”. With this definition, ballet can also be considered as an event since it can have different contests such as eliminations, semi-finals, and finals. With this, ballet is able to qualify in all three aspects which makes it still able to be an Olympic sport. Another requirement to be an Olympic sport is that an activity should be practiced by men in at least 82 countries and women in at least forty countries.
