After reading and analyzing both short stories “Oyster” and “Powder”, some similarities and differences caught my eyes. “Oyster” is a short story written by famous Russian author Anton Chekhov. “Oyster”, tells a story of a boy and his father who is unemployed, hungry and trying to bring himself to beg for money. In front of a fancy restaurant, a sign which says “oyster” takes the boy’s attention and the hungry boy begs to the rich men for the oysters. Snow is cold, unwanted sometimes but it cleans everything and when it’s gone everything is ready for the new start. Snow is the main and strongest element of the story. Without snow, there won’t be any story. First, snow hits hard and at that situation it is cold and unwanted because they need to get on the road and snow is blocking it. He can’t read the sign because it’s the luxury that he can’t reach. In the next scene, the boy distinguishes the smell that comes from restaurant and he reads the sign at last.(Chekov 3) Even he reads the sign and sees that it says oyster, he doesn’t know what that is. The poor little boy never heard it before but still amazed by it.(Chekov 3) Father knows that the oyster is a luxurious food and that is the reason he doesn’t explain his son in details when he asks his father about what oyster is.(Chekov 4) Another sign that show the oyster is symbolizing the luxury is when the rich man tells the boy, “Do you mean you eat oysters? A little chap like you!” and he laughs.(Chekov 5) The rich man’s tone is sarcastic and cynical because the oyster is luxurious food and he is making fun of them by judging their
