The famous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is about two ill-fated lovers, Romeo and Juliet, from two feuding families. In Friar Lawrence’s soliloquy, he expresses that there is nothing on Earth that is so evil that it does not provide the earth with some special quality. This means that everyone, no matter what, will always have some sort of evil and good in them, but depends on what situation that they’re in, where they will show that evil or good. Through Romeo, Friar Lawrence, and Capulet, Shakespeare demonstrates that man has the potential to be inherently good or evil, depending on the situation they’re in.

Since Romeo is banished from Verona for killing Tybalt, Friar Lawrence tells him to go to Mantua and stay there until it is safe for him to come back and be with Juliet. The Friar tells Romeo, “For then thou can’st not pass to Mantua, / Where thou shalt live till we can find a time / To blaze your marriage” (3. 3. 152-154). Because Romeo is banished, Friar Lawrence tells Romeo to go to Mantua and that he should stay there for a while until he makes Romeo and Juliet's marriage public and begs forgiveness from the Prince. This doesn’t make the Friar evil because he is trying to find a way for Romeo to be back in Verona as soon as possible, which is being selfless, but the Friar wants to do it in a way where he won’t get punished. The fact that Friar Lawrence wants Romeo to leave and not stay in his cell because he doesn't want to get caught and punished doesn’t make him an evil person because he is just putting his life before others which is acceptable. Another time Friar Lawrence shows selfish behavior is when Juliet has woken up next to the dead Romeo and the Friar realizes that the watchmen were coming, so he suggests for Juliet to run with him away so they don’t get caught, but she doesn’t listen, so Friar Lawrence ran away without Juliet because he didn’t want to risk his life. But before he leaves, he tells Juliet, “The Watch is coming. / Come, go, good Juliet. I dare no longer stay” (5. 3. 158-159). The Friar wants to save Juliet as well as himself, but she disagrees and wants to stay, therefore there is nothing Friar Lawrence can do about it and he doesn’t want to risk his life for Juliet.
