The motivational theory-Maslow's hierarchy of need is developed by Abraham Maslow in his paper "A Theory of Human Motivation. It consists of 5 stages, which are physiological need, safety need, social belongings, self-esteem and self-actualization. These 5 types of needs are arranged in pyramid form, which the physiological need is the lowest level while self-actualization is the highest level. This theory suggests that we only seek to satisfy next high level of need after the lower need is satisfied. To apply Maslow's hierarchy of need theory, the first and lowest level of need that must be satisfied is physiological need. It mostly includes the basic needs such as rest, food, shelter and drink. But when it is applied in workplace, it could be considered in financial needs like sufficient to pay household bill. Other than that, it can also include the break during working time and condition of working environment. If workers are working in an extremely hot and dirty environment, it would highly affect the job satisfaction of worker and then they won't have motivation to move to the next stage. It allows employer to divide the needs of employees easily to satisfy according to the stages. It is perfectly applied by Starbucks to satisfy employees’ need. This is because there a lot of plans are adopted by Starbucks which can achieve all stages of Maslow’s hierarchy of need, such as the extensive benefits packages “Your Special Blend”, Bean Stock Program, training program, full tuition fee and so on.
