In W.W. Jacobs short story, “The Monkey’s Paw” Mr. Whites personality is shown through the game of chess he plays with his son as he acts impulsively, and does not know his mistakes until it is to late. Mr. White while playing chess with his son notices “… having seen a mistake that could cost him the game after it was too late…”(1). Mr. White reacts impulsively in many instances, he acts before he has time to think in any situation. This becomes clear as his wishes for 200 pounds, knowing that Sergeant-Major Morris beseeched him not to use the paw because something bad happens with each wish. Jacobs short story, “The Monkey’s Paw” Mrs. White was able to make the inference that her son was dead when the visitor told her that he was not in any pain. Mrs. White is relieved at first when the visitor says, “ ‘but he is not in any pain’ ” (6). She then realizes that when he said not in any pain, he meant that he passed away. He believes that his son would come as the mangled corpse he saw at his funeral, alive he would be worse as a zombie. Mr. White says, “If only he could find it before that thing got in” (9).
