These writings did exactly that: forced and taught me to reflect on past times. In the process of these writings, I learned how beneficial reflecting on a period of life can be. Reflecting helps you look at things with a new perspective, lets you see things in a new light. Because of the time I spent reflecting, I was able to look back on how much I have evolved, changed, and progressed through a time period. It taught me that it is so easy to look at things so microscopically in the moment, but taking a step back helps you see the bigger picture. It is so easy to get discouraged at some times, but looking back helps you realize there a lot of times is not reason for that. Another way Gateway challenged me to think was through the education and career planning assignments. I came into college already knowing what I believed I wanted to study and do for the rest of my life. Without Gateway I never would have learned about the opportunities at Goddard, all the different resources at the library, or the coolest opportunities the University of Oklahoma offers with its study abroad programs. I also have learned that I am a visual learner. This has helped me tremendously when studying because I have learned better study techniques that help me retain the information better than with the techniques I was using before. I have learned that drawing things out as well as watching videos and animations of many different things in all subjects has helped me understand information better. Gateway has allowed me to learn more about myself that has in return improved my study skills.
I think one issue that is on the University of Oklahoma’s campus is the divide between members of the greek system and non greek members. I think it is easy sometimes to stay within your comfort zone, perhaps greeks. Because you are both a part of a community it gives you something in common with one another. I think too many people go into college with a safety net. College itself is a safety net. I do not think us as students need to create another one for ourselves.
