Problem Of College Education Essay

Today, there is a considerable problem facing those seeking a college education. Surprisingly, this problem stems not from higher educational institutions themselves but rather from the secondary schools who seek to prepare students to learn new skills either in college or through other means. Over the course of the past two decades, students seeking a post-high school education have found themselves lacking the necessary skills to participate in college study despite being completely eligible to attend. Nearly sixty percent of college freshmen find themselves caught up in this category because of gaps in their high school education, despite the preparation they may have undertaken. In order to better prepare students for higher education, high schools need to require college-level classroom experience for their students, increase teacher autonomy in the classroom, and focus on forming a foundation for higher learning based on composition.

Teachers are the best equipped to set curriculum that will prepare their students for what they will face in college. Teachers have specialized in their own field of study and have been certified to teach in this specialty. Because of this post-secondary academic knowledge, they have not only learned how and what to teach, but they also have personal experience in a college environment. This means that they can set a curriculum that not only covers basic understanding of the subject, but can also serve as a precursor to entry level college courses. For this reason, giving teachers more freedom in the classroom will allow them to better prepare their students for
