Therefore, this practice is based on a notion that health care delivery should be based on the overall benefit for the population as a whole. Moreover, if a treatment proved effective for a single individual, that treatment will be standardized and the whole community will benefit from it (Kulbok et al., 2012). Therefore, the purpose of population focused practice is to deliver a health care that benefits all the components of the population collectively and not individually, contrary to individual care which focuses on single cases separately (Kulbok et al., 2012). Only in very unique circumstances that population focused health care may focuses on individual patients. Various articles have been published regarding the integration of service learning in school programs. Most of these articles were based on a qualitative design. Other articles focused on discussing the purpose behind service learning. Service learning focuses on getting students to develop a since of cultural awareness, responsibility, justice, and role preparation (Groh, Stallwood, & Daniels, 2011). Service learning is a teaching and learning method that involves giving students a chance to participate in community services with the purpose of benefiting from such positive learning experience (Groh et al., 2012). This type of learning method gives students a chance to learn civic responsibility, serve the community, and ameliorate their nursing skills (Amerson, 2010). With service oriented learning, students are engaged in hands on activities. This type of learning empowers students to assume civic responsibilities and develop interpersonal communication skills while making positive contributions for the community. They are afforded a change to interact with a diverse population (Bassi, 2011). Therefore, nursing students learn necessary skills and knowledge to become productive members in the community (Bassi, 2011).
