Interpersonal Communication Video Analysis

In this communication video, I focused the interview on the importance of the individual’s nutrition, their exercise schedule, and how they cope with stress and related factors to these concepts. To begin the interview, I introduced myself at 0:01s stating, “Hi Samantha, I’m Becca, I’m your student nurse today…”. By introducing myself, I am beginning the Introductory Phase. It is important to identify my self and my role to make sure the client is comfortable with the situation and can express any concerns (Berman, Snyder, & Frandsen, 2016). At 0:05s I am clarifying consent with Samantha to make sure it is okay to interview her, “…interviewing you if that is okay?”. By asking for consent the client feels that they are active participants in …show more content…
It is important, next, to explain confidentiality to the client. By expressing that the interview is confidential the client is aware of their rights and should feel more inclined to share (Berman et al., 2016). The confidentiality statement needs to be sincere and comforting. I explain Samantha’s confidentiality rights at 0:15s in the video. This is an example of therapeutic use of self also. I am self aware that during and after this interview, it is my responsibility to keep this information private. Before moving into the working phase of the interview I must establish trust between the client and myself. “Trust is described as as the reliance on someone without doubt or question or the belief that the other person is capable of assisting in times of distress and in all likelihood will do so.” (Berman et al., 2016). To establish trust I used nonverbal and verbal techniques. Nonverbally, I have stayed open and directed my body toward the client for the length of the video so far. This shows I am listening and ready to help the client in anyway I can. Verbally so far, I have kept a neutral, nonjudgmental tone and explained to the client what will be …show more content…
Before I begin terminating the interview, at 10:00s I ask Samantha if she has any other questions for me. This is an example of the therapeutic use of self, respect. I respect Samantha for participating in this interview and I respect her rights as a client to ask me any questions that she desires to. Samantha does not have ay questions for me so we move into the termination phase of the interview. The termination phase consists mainly of summarizing and planning, and both the nurse and the client leave the relationship without any feelings of anxiety of dependence (Berman et al., 2016). I start indicating we are going to finish by asking her if she has any questions and then I summarize the entire interview. I use my last therapeutic technique by summarizing the interview and planning some goals for Samantha. This occurs at 10:03s and I stated, “It sounds like in the last couple minutes we talked about…”. I pointed out the biggest factor that leads to her stress and problems, which is time management, and I allow her to think of some of her own goals to try and accomplish. She starts stating her goals by saying, “I think I’m going to start planning

Upon completing interview one and two, I surmise that interviewing is not as easy as it appears. Whether it be asking questions to a stranger, friend, or a family member, there are still levels of discomfort because my role changes. I am no longer their friend who can talk in a causal manner, I have to contemplate and decide what questions to ask and how to prevent boundary violations. With friends and family, I often do not perceive this and conversations are more lenient. It was difficult to provide reflection without sounding hypercritical or appearing apathetic.…

It is important that nurses are skilled in the art of interpersonal communication. Skill refers to the ability to apply the appropriate behavior in the given context. These skills include being able to encourage patients to communicate, knowing how to pose questions, responding to the replies and giving information. Effective interpersonal communication does not always occur naturally, nor it is easily acquired. Communication has been recognized as a clinical skill that, like all other clinical skills, should be formally taught and developed (Duffy 1998).…

I searched out opportunities to give back and help the people in my community both in volunteering in hospitals, educating high school students, and interning in private practices. I even traveled with the organization Medlife, setting up a medical clinic to provide basic medical care and education to people in the poor and underserved communities surrounding Lima, Peru.…

I also wanted to make sure that before I went for the interview, that I had enough space on my phone to record the interview and that it was fully charged. I felt as though using my phone to record would allow me to listen to all that she had to say and keep eye contact, rather than writing information down as she talked. I thought to do these certain things to avoid loss of eye contact and to make Mrs. Low and even myself comfortable during this interview. I also made…

Role Play Reflection Before doing the video, I became somewhat anxious at the thought of being on camera; knowing that I was going to be evaluated did not help my anxiety at all. After all, I am an introvert; even at that I love listening to people talk about their life’s experiences, and love to help them resolve their issues whenever possible. This is one reason I am looking forward to learning more about the social work field. I have always been careful at how much advice I offer a person; even more so now, after this class, because I recognize that if a worker is not prepared to help in the proper way she can do more harm than good to all the parties involved in the process. I am also aware that I am a social work student, and that my…

It was hard for me to respond because I was not sure what he’s talking about half of the time.…

In counselling, relationships are very important. These relationships between the counsellor and the client are determined by the time and effort we put into developing and maintaining this relationship. In a way, a counsellor is a friend, but a friend who has the experience and the ability to apply different skills to assist people to solve their own problem instead of providing them with a solution. Self-evaluation is very useful to identify the strengths and weaknesses of these skills. The purpose of my self-evaluation is to reflect upon the used/unused skills which I applied by identifying areas where they have been used successfully and others that needs improvement.…
