Barriers of Communication
Communication is the process that involves transmission and exchange of ideas between two or more parties. It is an essential tool in every life situation from our daily private undertakings to office work. For the message to be well-understood and interpreted, communication must be effective. However, various factors tend to hinder the effectiveness of communication, otherwise known as barriers to communication. These barriers are commonly classified into seven groups.
The first barrier to communication is a physical barrier, which includes anything physical in nature that may make transmission of the message difficult. Mostly these barriers tend to hinder the message from being heard by the receiver such that both …show more content…
As well understood emotions can influence any actions we do in our daily lives hence communication is of no exception. In most situations, emotions are difficult to overcome but if possible should be avoided so as to allow effective conversations. A good example in the business world is a fear where a party that fears another party may be compelled to tell lies to make the senior party feel satisfied. A person issued with a death threat may fear to speak the truth. Another example is emotions associated with health problems. Communicating with a person who does not hear well may be difficult causing the sender to be rude depending on their level of politeness. Communication with an angry person may also not be effective as some may not be willing to utter a word or if willing they may act rudely or differently. The best way to avoid emotional barriers is by composing oneself properly, having confidence in one self. Unlike physical barriers, these are internal factors within us. Perceptual factors are associated with our personal feelings or attitude towards something. If one party has a negative attitude towards another party, an explicit conversation cannot be achieved. If one party feels superior over another party, clear communication cannot also be made. There will be conflicts and unnecessary arguments present that will hinder communication convenience . Mostly they are related on how we judge things or other people. An example also includes a person going into a situation with the thoughts that the person he will meet and talk to will not be willing to listen to his message or even if they listen they will just be pretending to, and they cannot be of any assistance. This may make him end up messing the communication. He may be dismissive, sarcastic or in any way critical therefore alienating the person from offering any assistance even if willing to. In another situation, it may occur to a person communicating with another individual he believes is hard of hearing although it may not be the case. The sender may end up yelling to the other person making him appear ridiculous and fail to communicate anything important in
