Introduction Effective leaders understand the importance of strong communication skills. It is imperative for employees to understand the vision of the department or the company, and how they are accountable to the goals, which must be communicated by leadership. It is equally important that leaders ensure the accuracy of the communication they are providing. Leaders must also take into account how their employees receive information and the quality of the message they are sending. In this essay I will share my experiences of ineffective or infrequent communication from my boss. I will analyze how poor communication can be viewed negatively and Finally, I will recommend how leadership can strengthen their communication skills.

As an Executive Director I would now be responsible for our Customer Service organization nationally. I was filled with excitement and eager to get started. My boss told me there were a few things she wanted me to focus on first and once completed, she would then make the organizational changes, closer to the end of the fiscal year, which is March 31st. During this time I focused on the tasks that I was assigned, and as the end of March approached I asked her what her plans were. Sadly, she deflected ownership, and indicated there would be a delay in my promotion until sometime in June. Unwilling to discuss what the delays meant to the changes she discussed with me, she committed to a new timeline, the end of June. 2011. As the end of June approached she indicated she was having problems getting the job description and compensation approved (something I thought had already been done), but offered no more details. It had now been seven months since she surprised me with the very exciting news, but now I was more irritated then excited. In early August she announced the reorganization to the business unit, and then proceeded to tell me that she was unable to get compensation approval, because my current pay grade was seen as appropriate. In this example my boss over promised and under delivered, leaving me feeling unappreciated. She over communicated when she should have done her due
