Compared to other economically similar countries, the United States has one of the highest firearm assault ratings in the world. The longer the US keeps things the way they are the more people 's lives are at risk. Thousands of people die every year due to gun violence, this should be reason enough to change the on going problem. A common argument is “guns don 't kill people, people kill people”. Admittedly people do bear some responsibility, however guns allow people to hurt others more easily. Although there will most likely never be a time when no guns are issued to any civilians in The United States, but we can make our laws lower the gun ownership to gun death ratio. Comparing America to these countries allows us to effectively compare the countries because these are some of the most economically similar countries to America(theglobaleconomey.com). In 2000 Germany has almost 200 deaths at the cost of a gun, Japan with about 70 death and the United Kingdom with nearly 80 deaths. But The United States has Over 30 times the amount of deaths of all three countries combined of 11,000 just in 2000.(Shown in the graph below comparing the 4 countries in 2000[GBD Compare]). This enormous amount of deaths could be the result in the lenient laws in the U.S. In America every state has different laws about the usage of firearms but the few federal laws that every state has to follow are, you must be a resident, 18 years or older and the federal government requires a background check of each person who is applying to gain ownership of firearm. Shootings will keep happening unless you restrict the gun laws. After the Columbine high School shooting in Colorado, 1999, hundreds of people 's lives changed yet nothing changed in order to prevent these tragedies from happening again. The next couple years after Columbine there was nearly a dozen of school shootings, one including two 6 year old children(Denver Post). There is no acceptable reason for a 6 year old child to have possession of a gun . In a CNN article on American deaths in terrorism vs. gun violence in one graph, President Obama talks about how “shootings were becoming all too routine” in the United states(CNN). Why is it that shootings in the U.S.are a now common thing people see on their televisions? Why can we still go about our day knowing that people are dying because of our carelessness? These experiences greatly affected the whole community 's lives but nothing was done to prevent anything for happening like that again, why isn 't that motive enough to find something new with the gun laws? School shootings alone show the difference between The United States and other countries. In Germany’s case, after a school shooting Germany made the gun laws more strict to help prevent something like it from happening again. As soon as something bad happened Germany changed thing to make a safer community for everyone , which is more than the
