Mentor Student Internship Essay

By attending an art and fashion school is New York City, it is evident that people have gone through different forms of education and have experienced aspects of their education that was meaningful to them. Not only was the education of the pre-college art school and art classes at high school itself necessary, but so was the mentor-student relationship I had with my teacher at Mill Street Loft, and my Advanced Placement Studio Art teacher, as well. They showed how important the arts are, and that a degree in the commercial arts is important. Since education comes in many forms, my experience at a pre-college art school and my art class in high school made me realize that pursuing a degree in the arts was the only fit for me.
Although I consider myself a creative and artistic person, I wasn’t always artistic and never thought I would go into the art field. Although I did well in school, I always thought I never had a talent because other students

Todd Poteet, an art director was a huge influence to me and helped me excel. The classes were exciting, challenging and demanding, characteristics of classes that were needed to build a strong portfolio. I learned a lot about his life in an arts field and what I would expect in college. My education was also meaningful because those teachers would talk about more than just class material to me. “Conversations became content full. Transparent” (Rodriguez 335). Talking to them became less about deadlines and homework, but more about personal development and full conversations. For example, my A.P. Art teacher one day after class asked me how I was, which really shocked me. I was stunned because for the first time in my education, I saw my teacher more than just someone who gave out grades. Talking to them about my goals as an artist introduced me to the importance of an arts

College is a life changing investment that prepares for life and career. The vast spectrum of knowledge, skills obtained, and experiences from a college degree more than compensates for the monetary cost of tuition. Creating art is my passion; I have always wanted to become a great artist ever since I was a child drawing on my walls and copying pictures from books. I have devoted my life to improving my talents by illustrating my own stories, practicing drawing daily, and challenging myself to earning my own money doing what I love by drawing commissions. Learning how to communicate through illustration is a valuable skill that will live with me for the rest of my life and progressing my artist career.…

As a student, I have gone through many teachers, all with lasting impacts, arguably, not all good. Although I cannot say I have looked through the looking glass of the teaching side, or walked a mile in any of my professor’s shoes; I’ve noted there is an importance to teachers who not only develop characters on a page, but the characters of their students. You, Mr. Smith, have dedicated your life to teaching students, enabling their comprehension. As Aristotle says, ‘Those who know, do. Those who understand, teach.’…

What does a student need to become well educated? Educational author Alfie Kohn offers a common belief. Written in his article “What Does it Mean to be Well Educated,” Kohn believes a student’s educational success can never be truly measured; since education differs by location, culture, educators, and monetary resources, defining the characteristics of a well-educated student becomes complex. However, Kohn explains the only reputable characteristic of a well-educated student “is to have the desire as well as the means to make sure that learning never ends,” (Kohn 4). Although Kohn believes a positive education can never be defined, the battle to define the successes of education continues to rack the minds of educators and parents alike; both worrying their students will fall behind.…

In the article, Twigg and Garvis (2010) discuss Voice 1 and looks at how early childhood educators are often lacking art education. This resonated with me not only because I don’t have any formal art education beyond primary school but also because it was a similar to what was presented in Peterson and French (2008) article regarding science in early childhood education. I found this interesting because it has caused me to question my own image of childhood educators. I have always thought of early childhood educators as experts on child development and that they understandwho know how early learning happens. Furthermore, as an early childhood educator through my education and experience, I feel that I know how to ‘set the stage’ for learning.…

It’s generally the “norm” in most families to go to college and study business, medical, general education, etc. (if they even go to school after high school). But it’s often looked down upon to go to art school. I’ve had friends who have decided to go to art school and their parents disowning them or looking down on them for it. I think some people who aren’t involved in the art community have this image of artist not being as successful as a educator, lawyer, doctor, etc.…

The Fundamentality of the Arts in Public Education Picture a barren wasteland, empty of any thought that branches outside of normality. Beige walls decorate bland streets filled with broken dreams and sullied minds. This is the world without art. Earth takes breaths of life and joy because we strive to create. The world needs art, not for survival, but for the sake of its people.…

As I walked into the AP Studio Art classroom on the first day of my field study, I was taken aback by the vivid colors and distinct decorations that fought for my attention. Before studying the class, my perception of art had always been that it was sporadic, messy, and wild yet organized beautifully by an artist to make something for everyone to enjoy. This description fit the art classroom exactly. The walls were obviously originally painted white, but over the years have been transformed into landscapes of masterpieces by art students enrolled in the courses. Pictures of human eyes, dragons, mountains, and other shapes stole my attention as I attempted to take in the scenery.…

I love watching small animators on YouTube who are trying to make their own way through art school and I always wonderful if I could make something as good as theirs one day. The ASA Art Show was this past Monday and as I stared at all of these amazing pieces of work that probably took a long time to finish, I again wondered if I could one day be that great. Art is something that everyone is good at, but in order to get better and become one of the greats they need to practice and not be afraid to bring out their skills or creativity. While 57% of young people find more importance in “doing something they find enjoyable or making a difference in society” than money, a shocking number of talented students aren’t taking a risk in diving into the world of artistry (White). Sophomore in college Rachel Miller has identified as a visual artist for several years and is considerably talented. However, she is not pursuing a career in the arts, but instead in Psychology. She would much rather be in an advertising or art major, but due to parental pressures, she is stuck in a major that she doesn’t particularly enjoy. She is doing this because she wants a “real job,” claiming that she won’t earn any money being a ‘starving artist,’ therefore won’t be as happy (Miller).…

Art education is not something that should not exceed the budget of other schools that cannot afford it and instead be shared equally among all types of public schools. Art education is seems to benefit a young child dramatically, “The arts also contribute to the education of young children by helping them realize the breadth of human experience, see the different ways humans express sentiments and convey meaning, and develop subtle and complex forms of thinking” (Sousa) Although the arts are often thought of as separate subjects, like chemistry or algebra, they really are a collection of skills and thought processes that transcend all areas of human engagement. Art has its own form of educational value and students develop better interaction skills with their peers and the public. Being able to develop a bond with peers with their same interest’s help students open up and become less shy thus helping them build a more sophisticated way of thinking.…
