Once entering college, it is like a completely new world. You receive much more freedom than what was given at home. A substantial change, however, is you have to choose your major, arrange your own schedule, and make an appearance to class on your own. Although, there are some people that attend college to commence their life, there are others that get sidetracked by the parties and drugs. College students that fail to remember what they are going to school for and tend to walk in the wrong direction. College dormitories are constant distractions and can be menacing. The abuse of alcohol is very high in college dorm vicinities. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism indicated that, “The problem with college drinking is not necessarily the drinking itself, but the negative consequences that result from excessive drinking.” (NIH). Each year, drinking affects college student causing death and health problems. The Hutchinson News reveals “A college football player Alton Franklin is standing trial on a charge of second degree murder in the death last September of a 26-year-old Brandon Brown.” (Darcy). Furthermore, “Brown died Sept. 22, six days after he was injured in a fight early Sept. 16 outside of 438 N. Carrie St. in McPherson, where there had been a college drinking party.” (Darcy). Illegal drug use is extremely abused in the college premises. The essence of marijuana scent is very prevalent in dormitory perimeters. An article affirmed “After a report of a strong marijuana odor coming from a Hutchison Community College dorm room, the Hutchison Police officers arrested an 18-year old male for attempting to distribute 24 grams of marijuana. With this is mind, Evening Standard publicized, “Four wealthy Russians who used an iPhone to film themselves gang raping a student at a private college were facing jail today. Davtyan, an international water polo player, held a party at his college dorm. The court heard the girl had a shot of whiskey. There was no confirmed evidence her drink was spiked but she felt "funny, dizzy and peculiar". She went to the party and vomited, then fell asleep. When she woke, a man was having sex with her but she could not move, the jury heard.” (Cheston). Sexual harassment, sexual assault, and stalking not only occurs from student to student, it can also occur with the professor and the student as well. In addition, student conflict situations arise daily on campus and in college dorms. Fights can occur in college dorms due to arguments or misperceiving situations, which can escalate quickly. To support this claim, The Buffalo News protested, “The boyfriend of a Brockport State College student found dead in her dorm room early Saturday was arrested about an hour later at a Thruway rest stop, authorities said. University police found the victim, whose name has not been released, about 3 a.m. in her dorm room at McLean Hall after her mother called the college because she was worried about her daughter.”
