College athletics have always been an essential part of American culture, and they have gradually developed into a multimillion dollar industry over the past century. Big time college sports have not only made schools popular, but have also made them wealthy. Schools are making million dollar deals with private corporations through advertisement, merchandise, and broadcasting rights. However, debates erupted when people started to wonder where do college athletes, the backbone of the athletic program, benefit from all this. Schools are not mandate to pay college athletes professional salaries, but they should be paying athletes a stipend and provide them financial support when needed. College athletes are very vulnerable, and their rights should be protected. It is not right for schools and the NCAA to be solely the beneficiary from athletic programs. Schools and the NCAA should be behind the backs to protect college athletes rather than exploiting them. It is selfish for them to label college athletes as amateurs in order to avoid paying them more money except their athletic scholarships. Academic reforms should also take place for student athletes. The academic standards for student athletes are low, and schools have a big part of not providing adequate academic opportunities for athletes. Student athletes have the right to explore their career paths and interests at school, and the schools should not take away this opportunity from them. Many of the athletes’ education opportunities are being compromised by schools, and they end up working non-decent jobs after graduating if they fail to turn professional. Schools are the main cause that influences athletes’ future, and they not only should put the athletes as their priority, they should do all their best to protect the athletes rather than exploiting them and using them as pawns for
