Improved Essays
Remember the Titans is a true story of a High School in Alexandria, Virginia, during the early 1970’s. Two schools had combined to form the T.C. Williams High School. Caucasians and African-Americans were forced together and tensions arise when the Caucasian football coach, Coach Yoast, was replaced by an African-American, Coach Boone. These two coaches had two very different coaching styles, tactics and roles. Throughout this essay the different roles of the coach will be discussed, as well as how effective each coaching method was and how the players responded to the different coaching styles.

There are three main styles of coaching; Authoritarian, democratic and casual. Coach Yoast has been coaching most of the boys for a couple of years and is seen to be more of a friend, because respect runs both ways between the boys and him. Coach Yoast’s style of coaching is mostly democratic. However, Coach Boone on the other hand is mostly an authoritarian. He is new to the school and has taken over the role of lead coach. The boys don’t yet have the respect for him, and being African-American during that time, was difficult for anybody to gain respect from white people. In these circumstances, Coach Boone had not much of a choice but to get the boys to listen and cooperate with him by being an authoritarian. “This is no democracy. It is a dictatorship. I am the law.” Coach Boone uses strong lines like this all through the movie to prove his leadership. Coach Yoast’s style of coaching is generally a lot calmer and when he is in charge he learns from them as well as them learning from him. “I hope you boys have learned as much from me this year as I've learned from you.” Says coach Yoast at the end of the season. “You've taught this city how to trust the soul of a man rather than the look of him. And I guess it's about time I joined the club.” Coach Yoast has been able to adapt and become a better coach from listening and learning from the boys he is coaching. As a coach it is important to communicate with their players …show more content…
It is important for coaches to consider skills such as; organising, observing, analysing, communicating and several others. Coach Boone is a very organised coach. He pushed the boys hard over the two weeks at training camp and he was committed to improve their performance One example of his commitment over camp was when he got everybody up early to do an early morning run. “You will follow myself and the other coaches. We’re gonna take a little run through the woods”. Not only did he direct the boys to do this, but he included himself and ran with the boys. Both Coach Boone and Coach Yost were effectively able to organise, observe, and analyse the players performances throughout the film, however the tension between Coach Boone and Coach Yoast sometimes resulted in a lack of communication. During one of the games Coach Yoast made a decision to swap players positions without consulting the head coach, Coach Boone. Although this decision was beneficial in the way it played out, Coach Boone was disappointed with the lack of communication that Coach Yoast displayed. If the coaches are lacking communication this can affect the way the team is responding and cooperating together.
In conclusion taking on different roles as a coach effects the style of coach a person is. It is important to choose the right style of coach for the age group and personalities

I can humbly say this as all my coaches, both good and bad, have taught me in some way what it takes to be a good athlete and most importantly how to be a good human being. They have taught me life lessons that I can only hope to preserve by instilling them into my athletes in my time as a coach. The articles I have chosen to highlight in this essay show how coaches have helped to develop character in athletes, how they pushed them to be the best on and off the field of play, and illustrate how they stepped into the lives of athletes and became so much more than just a coach.…

Boone exhibited an autocratic, transactional leadership style, ruling by fear and consequences with the players and coach Yoast. Boone set the tone by showing his legitimate authority and control in an attempt to create structure and order, for example, on the buses traveling to pre-season boot camp, Boone forced integration of the players based on offensive and defensive roles rather than race. Additionally, Boone asserted his dominance over coach Yoast at the outset, leaving no doubt who was the head…
