Certification of the facility will ensure that the owners are following the laws that govern operators of long-term care facilities and that the facility is visited often to confirm that all that is to be done is actually done.

Does the facility have an Alzheimer’s unit or other special care area restricted to patients with special care needs? The facility having the Alzheimer’s unit will ensure that his mother’s needs will be met because the unit’s staff was trained to deal with patients with this disease. He should also enquire of the location of the unit within the facility as it relates to other areas. It should not be in a separate area as this will make the patients feel alone and separated from the other due to their disease.
