Have you ever stood in a line and noticed a family with several overweight children and wondered, what could have been done to prevent this? It’s a common sight to see these days. Most children now days are barely able to participate in daily activities because they have become so overweight. More and more children are developing diseases as a result of their obesity that will cause serious problems in their life. The weight of a person often impacts not only their health, but also their self-esteem. All of these issues are becoming more and more serious, and not enough has been done to stop or prevent it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also stated that children who are obese have more risk factors “of developing cardiovascular diseases, such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol and are at greater risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem” (“Adolescent”). With these factors out there for everyone to see, why as parents would people not try everything in their power to help prevent their child from these risks? Childhood obesity is an extremely serious issue and must be given the utmost attention that it both requires and deserves.
Because children’s eating habits are entirely dependent on the eating choices of the parents, it is important that the parents set a good example. Just like any other daily routine such as proper hygiene and socially acceptable behavior, parents must ensure that they show positive eating habits so that their children are well equipped with that knowledge in later life. According to Stanford Health, “parents who eat healthy foods … set an example that increases the likelihood their children will do the same” (“Stanford”). Simple tasks such as encouraging less sugary drinks and eating well-balanced meals will work to change family eating habits.
